Digital Roots in Babylon is an immersive art installation that delves into the intersection of Afrofuturism and cyberpunk aesthetics, set within a dystopian future office space where technology and nature are entwined in unexpected ways. Curated by Rakaya Cohen, the installation invites visitors to explore a speculative world where lush greenery intertwines with retro-futuristic technology like CRT monitors displaying Afrofuturistic visuals. UV lighting adds to the atmosphere, casting an ethereal glow that blurs the boundaries between the organic and synthetic, past and future.

At its core, the exhibition addresses global concerns around technological advancement, cultural identity, and environmental sustainability. Through its Afrofuturistic lens, Digital Roots in Babylon envisions a future where cultural heritage continues to thrive, even as the world becomes more digitally driven. By showcasing the fusion of nature and technology, the exhibition invites viewers to consider how cultural narratives evolve alongside technological progress, and how past experiences continue to shape future identities in an ever-changing world.

This thought-provoking installation encourages viewers to contemplate the complexities of a future shaped by rapid technological change. It explores how the legacies of history resonate through the use of old technology and how cultural traditions, technological progress, and natural elements come together to create a new vision for the future. Visitors are transported to a speculative world where progress, environment, and cultural resilience are in constant dialogue.
This exhibition has been organised by AIR Gallery and features work by Rakaya Cohen, one of the Student Graduate Award winners from the BA Fine Art program at Manchester School of Art, selected in 2023. We are excited to showcase her innovative vision as part of our ongoing commitment to supporting emerging artists. We extend our heartfelt thanks to PINK for generously hosting this event.
